Dushan Makovitsky (Dušan Makovický; Д. П. Маковицкий) was the resident physician and diarist at Yasnaya Polyana. The PSS commentary to [[The Great Sin]] dates the essay's composition largely from his *Yasnaya Polyana Notes*.[^1] He was also one of the copyists of its manuscripts.[^2]

## What his notes date

- **28 April 1905**: the essay was read aloud to several people that day.[^3]
- **1 July 1905**: the finished article was given to [[Maria Tolstaya]] (Maria Lvovna Obolenskaya) to copy for [[Russkaya Mysl]], with the intention of taking it to the post in person.[^4]
- **11 July 1905**: the proofs arrived.[^5]

The commentary calls the notes for 28 April "unpublished".[^3] Her copy for Russkaya Mysl has not survived, and the commentary uses this entry to explain why the journal text differs from the surviving manuscripts.[^6]

## The doctor in chapter VII

Chapter VII tells of "a doctor of my acquaintance" reading a newspaper aloud to peasants at "a large railway station"; the article is about an "agrarian" congress, and at the end an old man "sighed deeply and crossed himself".[^7] The commentary identifies the doctor as Makovitsky, at Tula station, and says what he read was not an article on the agrarian congress but the author's own *On the Solution of the Land Question According to Henry George's Project*, an extract from [[To the Working People]] printed in the newspaper *Evening Post*, No. 117, 20 April 1905. Its source is the *Yasnaya Polyana Notes*, entry for 25 April 1905.[^8]

## Open questions

- His biography: dates, origin, when he entered the household, and the span and publication history of the *Yasnaya Polyana Notes*.
- Whether other 1905 composition events beyond the three above are datable from his Notes.
